It’s that time of year again with preparations well underway for The Channel Mechanics Charity Challenge 2023! After the success of last year’s Croagh Patrick Climb, the team is eager to go bigger and better for 2023. With that in mind, we are setting an ambitious target of raising €20,000 for our two nominated charities: Ability West and Western Alzheimers.

Two Wheels One Mission:

In order to reach our fundraising target, this September sees 40 Channel Mechanics team members take on The Great Western Greenway. This iconic route is Ireland’s first dedicated walking and cycling trail along the Atlantic coast. The day promises to take people out of their comfort zones and push their limits, all while fundraising for two deserving charities. And if last year’s charity challenge is anything to go by, we’re sure the harsh unpredictable weather of the Wild Atlantic Way will make an appearance on the day! Come rain, hail, or shine, the team is determined to persevere and raise funds for these two worthy charities.

Beginning in the popular seaside town of Westport, the 44km off-road walking and cycling route will take the team on a journey through the villages of Newport and Mulranny, before coming to a finish in Achill. Passing by Croagh Patrick, Clew Bay, and the Nephin Beg Mountain Range, we are guaranteed to encounter some spectacular landscapes. The route comprises diverse gradients that navigate through woodlands and farmland, with abundant wildlife and flora along the way. It is certainly a unique route that promises to challenge even some of our more experienced cycling enthusiasts!

Channel Mechanics Donate-a-Day:

In addition to taking part in the challenge, we are once again offering our employees the opportunity to contribute towards the fundraiser via our Donate-a-Day scheme. By doing so, employees volunteer a day’s holiday to the charity event, with their salary for that day contributing towards our total fundraising efforts. Furthermore, Channel Mechanics pledges to match €200 for each member of staff donating a day, offering a further incentive to each team member to take part in the Donate-a-Day scheme.

Our 2023 Charity Partners:

Ability West:

Ability West is a voluntary organisation that has been providing services and supports to children and adults with intellectual disability and comorbidities for 60 years. They provide an array of services including day, residential, respite, rehabilitative training, supports towards employment, active ageing, community support. As well as this, they also offer multidisciplinary supports such as social work, psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. They have grown significantly, with over 600 individuals availing of their services in 62 centres across Galway City and County.

Western Alzheimer’s:

Western Alzheimer’s aim to provide care and support to those that are living with, or have been effected by, dementia. Their aim is to provide respite to carers and promote a dementia friendly, safe, and inclusive environment. Driven by their strong ethos of sharing the burden of care with those who most need their help, their mission is to promote a keen awareness of the nature and impact of Alzheimers Disease. Their comprehensive list of services include Long Stay Residential Care, Respite Care, Day Care and In-Home Care in the community.
